Longevity is the art of tuning ourselves to Great Nature, so that we may use the cycles of time to our advantage in order to fully and consciously participate in the eternal now of each moment of our lives. Longevity is not simply about the length of a life, but rather the quality of a life; the health of our body, mind and spirit that makes life worth living. Longevity is the art of living so fully and lovingly that we leave a legacy behind which renders us eternal.
While no one thing can truly guarantee a long life, there are certain conditions that may promote a life well lived. Join us this fall for an exploration of longevity, time and setting the conditions for a good life.
THE NATURE OF TIME (Thursday September 12th)
with Abbie Galvin
Time gives us an opportunity to master techniques, organize our daily lives, plan for the future and reflect on our past. Nature's time is marked by its patterns that are redundant and inevitable. Personal patterns, seen as our habits, have to be conscious, planned, considered, changed and reflected upon. To have a good life, and possibly a long one, we may cultivate the quality of how we spend time by expanding the "now," making life eternal.
HOME PRACTICE AS PERSONAL RELIGION (Thursday September 19th)
with Abbie Galvin
Home practice sets us up to re-mother ourselves. A home practice invites us onto our mat and into ourselves in order to have an interior life of reflection, meaning and personal agency. It is over time, with repetition and good technique that we can refine our capacity, discover our stellar nature, and create change in our lives. In this session we will explore the theory of home practice and move through the practice Abbie uses daily.
THE NARRATIVE THREAD (Thursday September 26th)
with Ty Watson
The Narrative Thread is the strand of the self that correlates to the central line, the implicit middle of oneself, unifying the personal with the universal. In this session we will broaden our scope - turning to the bigger narratives of literature, myth and science fiction - to explore how this idea is woven throughout something larger than ourselves and end with a slow, meditative breath work practice that will “wrap” us in our breath to organize our own personal narratives, so that we might better articulate our own stories.
NUTRITION FOR LONGEVITY (Thursday October 3rd)
with Chris Chen
A coherent approach to eating is necessary for the basis of vitality and longevity. In this session we will explore an integrated approach to eating and nutrition from a macro level of how much and how often to eat and why; continuing down to the specifics of how to eat in order to satisfy vitamin, micronutrient and vitamin levels, so that we may manage stress and nurture vitality with food throughout our lives.
THE FIVE PRANAS (Thursday October 10th)
with Chase Connolly
A yoga practice focused on longevity requires us to make the most of our life force and nurture it at every opportunity. Hatha Yoga texts provide a deep understanding of this energy and offer a systematic approach to learning to feel and move the five vital life forces governing every process in the body. Through asana, meditation, and pranayama, we will cover techniques and philosophy to become more adept at these practices, ultimately calming the mind and body to live life empowered with intention and choice.
SELF CARE FOR LONGEVITY (Thursday October 17th)
with Danielle Rosati
Even if we live and eat well, we all need techniques of consciously attending to our physicality. In this session we will explore various self care modalities and their importance in the longevity of our mind body system. Proper nutrition, hydration, personal care products and intermittent detoxification techniques are foundational aspects in the regulation of our physical, mental and emotional states and enable us to find balance throughout the course of our lives.
FACE READING IN TIME (Thursday October 24th)
with Abbie Galvin
The five elements are a cycle of time that can be seen through the face. How do we "face" our lives through time? In this session we will explore how face reading is a map of our lives in time. We will look at the face as a hologram of ourselves, how our face is a fractal of our whole self and how different areas of our faces tell the story of our lives, the potentials for our future, and reveal our personal natures.
MAPPING LIFE IN MENOPAUSE (Thursday October 31st)
with Cari Friedman + Heather Greer
The archetypal season of menopause is Autumn - full of reflection, transformation and vision - an important and potent time that comes with complexity. How we embody this phase is determined by how we have lived in Spring and Summer. In this session we will explore various Katonah Yoga theory and practices, as tools and techniques to cultivate fulfillment and creativity during this time of life.
ASTROLOGICAL CYCLES OF TIME (Thursday November 7th)
with Sophia Campana
Astrology is the oldest science on earth that points us towards natural laws that govern all evolution. The signs and symbols that make up this system, represent distinct energies that occur around us in the natural world. In this session we will explore how to understand and decode the astrological landscape of any given time, so that we may be empowered to work with the energies at play, as we move through the seasons of our lives.
BENDING TIME MEDITATION (Thursday November 14th)
with Ally Bogard
The body has tiny caps at the end of the chromosomes which help protect them and keep them stable. Excess stress, over time, shortens and frays the telomeres. Meditation is a key practice in maintaining the health of not only your brain but your entire cellular system. In this session we will explore meditation practices for cellular regeneration & vagal nerve tone.
SOUNDS FOR LONGEVITY (Thursday November 21st)
with Linsey Boisvert
Therapeutic sounds used in a sound bath support our overall wellbeing by bolstering both our nervous and immune systems. These oscillating sounds penetrate our bodies: skin, bones, organs and minds. By shifting the patterns of our brain waves, the sounds induce relaxation and creativity, increase immunity, intuition, subconscious connections and help reduce stress and anxiety. In this session we will experience a sound bath, play with vocal practices and learn the science of how sound can sustain the health of our minds and bodies for the long haul.
EVOLUTIONARY TAROT (Thursday December 5th)
with Sophia Campana
The tarot is a collection of archetypes that depicts the journey of a souls evolution through its lifecycle. In this session we will consider the 78 cards of the tarot as a map, so that we may begin to understand how the cards reveal a cohesive and progressive narrative. We will explore how to glean our own meanings from the cards and how to use them for self reflection and personal contemplation.
THE UNCONSCIOUS (Thursday December 12th)
with Jason Bacasa
One effective way to connect with our instincts and feelings is by engaging with the unconscious mind. Through discussion and exercise, we will explore ways to connect with our unconscious, allowing us to access deeper instincts and drives that we may not have fully integrated into our lives. By tapping into these, we can harness a vital and personal life force, unique to each of us, which can guide and propel us through life, no matter the stage.
LUNG CAPACITY (Thursday December 19th)
with Ty Watson
More time, more volume, more air are all about one’s lung capacity. The consciousness of our breathing gives us a portal into having more time and allows us to begin using our own breath as a route to finding inspiration and intellect, in the effort of galvanizing our mind, and in extending the moment by amplifying our personal volume. In this session we will explore various breath work practices that increase our lung capacity.
HOW TO LIVE A LONG LIFE (Thursday December 26th)
with Abbie Galvin
In our last session we will explore longevity through the lens of personal rituals by looking at Blue Zone communities and what makes their quality of life so unique. And while most of us don’t live in one of these communities, exploring the matrix of habits that contribute to well being: sleep, breathing, community, nature, a daily life of purpose and meaning, can offer us a recipe with which to start our own trajectory.
